Eagerly Awaiting The Elder Scrolls Online: All About TESO

The Elder Scrolls Online (TESO), set in the same world (but a different time) as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is one of the upcoming MMORPGs that has gotten a lot of buzz in the MMO gaming world. It’s easy to see why, of course. Skyrim was a huge commercial success and even today is still quite popular. This had made the Elder Scrolls franchise big news in the game industry. The question on most people’s mind is whether TESO will be as successful as Skyrim.

Speculation: Will The Elder Scrolls Online Go Free-to-Play?

Here is an interesting tweet about the TESO business model.

They will be announcing the business model officially later on but all signs point to p2p. Evidence? Check out The Elder Scrolls Online Amazon.com page. The price is currently set to $59.99 and you can already pre-order at that price.

One of the things that often comes up in conversations in forums, websites or blogs when people talk about The Elder Scrolls Online is how it can be compared to another MMORPG that was also very hyped before, during and after its release.

Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) is an MMORPG by Bioware. Costing an estimated $150 to $200 million to develop, it is one of the most expensive video games ever made. In the months and weeks leading up to its launch date all of the MMO gaming websites were full of SWTOR news, so much so that you could barely visit any forum that wasn’t full of people talking about its upcoming release. Sometimes even non-gaming forums were full of SWTOR speculation. It sold very well at launch but was reportedly hit with tons of subscription cancellations, so much so that the game is now going free to play.

So if SWTOR couldn’t make it as a pay-to-play MMORPG, can TESO?

Check out this thread on The Escapist where most gamers seem convinced that TESO will fail as a p2p MMORPG. What are your thoughts about this? Post a comment and let us know what you think.
